The Newry
Branch of I.W.A.I. have decided to hold a boating rally for all types of craft
on the weekend of 16th-17th June this year to highlight
this historic waterway.
Boat owners are invited to assemble on Saturday 16th
June at No 18 buoy adjacent to Carlingford Marina
at 10:45 and to proceed in formation to
the Victoria Sea Lock for locking in at 12.00 noon followed by a leisurely 3
mile cruise
(speed
limit 4 M.P.H.) through stunning South Armagh scenery before berthing at the
Albert Basin in the commercial centre of the port, adjacent to “The Quays”
retail centre
It is planned
to have a social evening on Saturday night in addition to various activities in
or near the Albert Basin. The following day the boats will depart the basin at
11.00 a.m. for a 12.00 lock out
in the Victoria Lock which should enable them to exit the ship canal just before
high water.

Quays” retail complex, Albert
Basin, Newry, July 2005
It is hoped to
attract all types of craft for this event and owners of smaller craft will have
an opportunity to launch their vessels at a slipway on the Omeath Road. Various
organisations including Ocean Youth Trust Ireland, The Old Gaffers’ Society and
various sailing clubs have been invited to participate.
